How the Background Remover works
This tool uses the open-source @imgly/background-removal library (IS-Net segmentation model) running entirely in your browser via WebAssembly / WebGPU when available. The model downloads on first use (~40–80 MB) and is cached by the browser. Your image never leaves this device.
Quality: The tool prefers the higher-precision model for better preservation of hands, hair and fine edges. If that model cannot load, it automatically falls back to the balanced model.
License note: The library is AGPL-3.0. Model assets are served from a public CDN by default; you may self-host them (see theme README).
Limitations: No browser-side model is perfect. Fine hair strands, transparent objects, heavy shadows, and subjects whose colors closely match the background can still show imperfect edges. Always compare the original and result side-by-side before downloading.
